Scope:<\/h2>\n

This article is concerned with the dissolution by legal proceedings of the marriage relationship in whole or in part, the grounds for, and the general operation and effect of such dissolution. Procedural matters pertaining to dissolution or divorce proceedings are also included. The article also discusses rights, duties, and liabilities respecting spousal support, the division of marital property, and the determination of property rights, including agreements pertaining to these matters and the equitable distribution by the courts of marital property. Also included is discussion of the custody and support of the children of the parties, child visitation rights, the operation and effect of foreign divorces, and foreign support or custody judgments or decrees.<\/p>\n

Various aspects of divorce and separation are affected by federal statutes, including payment of civil service retirement benefits, military retirement pay, restrictions on garnishment, full faith and credit for child custody determinations and child support orders, marriages of veterans, education assistance for survivors and dependents of veterans, effective dates of veterans’ benefit awards and of reductions and discontinuances of veterans’ benefits, Social Security insurance benefits, enforcement of obligation to make child support or alimony payment, aid to families with children, and procedures for child support enforcement; aid to families with children.<\/p>\n
