Overview, \u00a7 572 &#8211; Classification of alimony<\/h2>\n<p>Alimony is divided into three classes according to the time and purpose of the allowance: (1) temporary alimony,[<a href=\"#fn1\" name=\"fn-ref1\">1<\/a>] which is for maintenance during pendency of the action[<a href=\"#fn2\" name=\"fn-ref2\">2<\/a>] and may include the payment of counsel fees and other expenses of the litigation;[<a href=\"#fn3\" name=\"fn-ref3\">3<\/a>] (2) permanent alimony,[<a href=\"#fn4\" name=\"fn-ref4\">4<\/a>] which is made upon a judgment of separation or divorce;[<a href=\"#fn5\" name=\"fn-ref5\">5<\/a>] and (3) rehabilitative alimony,[<a href=\"#fn6\" name=\"fn-ref6\">6<\/a>] which is designed to place the dependent spouse in a position of self-support.[<a href=\"#fn7\" name=\"fn-ref7\">7<\/a>]<\/p>\n<div class=\"feature-para-block\">\n<div class=\"feature-para-name\">Practice Tip:<\/div>\n<p>Temporary alimony may, depending on the jurisdiction, be referred to as ad interim alimony, alimony pendente lite,[<a href=\"#fn8\" name=\"fn-ref8\">8<\/a>] interim periodic support,[<a href=\"#fn9\" name=\"fn-ref9\">9<\/a>] interim spousal support,[<a href=\"#fn10\" name=\"fn-ref10\">10<\/a>] or postseparation support.[<a href=\"#fn11\" name=\"fn-ref11\">11<\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"update-stack\">\n<div class=\"stack-note-head\">Cases:<\/div>\n<div class=\"note-text\">\n<p>Under Illinois law, a support obligation can take several forms, including: (1) &#8220;periodic maintenance,&#8221; that is, payments for an indefinite period in an indefinite amount subject to modification in response to a change in the parties&#8217; circumstances, (2) &#8220;maintenance in gross,&#8221; a fixed sum of money, payable in installments for a fixed period of time, that is nonmodifiable, and (3) &#8220;property settlements in lieu of maintenance,&#8221; a lump sum payment, often payable in installments, given in exchange for a waiver of rights, including periodic maintenance, that is nonmodifiable. <span class=\"cite\">\t<a href=\"https:\/\/1.next.westlaw.com\/Link\/Document\/FullText?findType=Y&amp;originatingContext=document&amp;transitionType=DocumentItem&amp;pubNum=0000164&amp;refType=RP&amp;originatingDoc=&amp;serNum=2036599612\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"In re McLain, 533 B.R. 735 (Bankr.
